LightSpeed Screencasts

tag icon Tagged as LightSpeed, Products

We have just started working on creating a series of screencasts to highlight how certain features of LightSpeed can be used to create better solutions. All screencasts include a download of the code used in the video, along with a SQLite database to save the hassle of needing to setup a database to start experimenting on your own.

The initial screencast is about Eager Loading with LightSpeed and we will be releasing more in the near future. I will post blog updates as they get published so subscribe if you would like to be kept up to date.

Currently planned for release soon:

  • Introduction to LightSpeed
  • Validation with LightSpeed
  • Schema round-tripping with the LightSpeed Designer

If there are topics you would particularly like to see or if you have any feedback then please leave a comment.

Hope that helps,

John-Daniel Trask

  1. Great,

will we be able to download the screencasts (not just stream)?

    thanks

  2. Hi nefajciar,

Currently we do not have a download link but I will look at adding one so you can get them. They are currently not protected in any manner so you could just download the SWF file if you’re in a hurry :)

I’ll post an update on here once I’ve done this.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  3. thanks, firefox extension helped ;)

as my suggestion, I would recommend you to look on the unique http://www.summerofnhibernate.com video course and generally follow (or even better) their learning plan.

as we know and can’t deny – LightSpeed is _much_ more simple OR/M to learn and develop with – so we could end with videos that are _much_ shorter and more up to the point, with the topics of good DDD rather than topics of solving all of the complexities that NHibernate users need to diggest or learn to begin with.

IMHO, there is nothing better for propagating a product than a series of video learning materials, not only for individuals but for the whole company.

  4. Hi nefajciar,

I’ve uploaded a wmv version of the video here:

    http://assets.mindscape.co.nz/casts/ls2/EagerLoad/EagerLoad.wmv

I’ll update the screencast page and add downloadable versions with each new screencast.

Thanks for your thoughts on the summer of hibernate videos – I agree about covering good general practice about DDD being of use as well as specifics of LightSpeed.

    Thanks

  5. feedback to video:

I know there are many feedbacks how to do a proper screencast (the most influential man here is Scott Hanselman with his numerous posts about it – at least for me) but I’ll throw just rough suggestions:

    1. allways do a widescreen screencast (won’t go into the debate why).

    2. when you are “hitting” a particular problem you are going to solve with lightspeed, _allways_ show a code for a viewer!
Not just the talk + model designer showcase + property change. So code, code, code ;)
e.g. you should change your foreach product query to just select one (or 2) particular product(s) and show how eager loading will fail with selecting all the SKUs.

    3. be calm with moving sliders :) moving up+down all the time isn’t helping me a lot to read the SQL generated code, wait 2-3 seconds so I don’t need to pause and read the generated select query ;)

    4. I would like to see other way of setting named aggregates, e.g. attributes based on association. For me this quick article is more up to the point.

    5. Thanks a lot for a 5 minutes of great screencast. I get usually bored after 15 min – so 10 minutes timeframe for your videos is probably better for the future ;) e.g. here you could go into more detail on named aggregates, which is the most interesting feature from the 3 (lazy loading, eager lodaing, named aggregates).

good luck with LightSpeed, keep it light and “speedy” :)
