LightSpeed: VS 2010 support and the 3.1 release
It’s been almost exactly six months since we shipped LightSpeed 3.0, and in the next couple of weeks we’ll be releasing the latest and greatest version: LightSpeed 3.1. There’s a lot coming with the new release — much more than we initially planned to include — and we’ll be posting more information about the contents in the near future. However I thought it would be a good idea to post a couple of notes about 3.1 and the current state of its headline feature, Visual Studio 2010 support.
Visual Studio 2010 support
New Visual Studio releases always have a lot of momentum behind them and eager customers have been asking for us to get the LightSpeed design surface into VS2010 ever since beta 2 came out. We’ve had previews out throughout the beta cycle but we’re now pleased to announce that (after much last-minute gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair) it’s fully released and integrated into the LightSpeed nightly build.
Although this is currently only in the nightly builds, 3.1 will mean the non-nightly download (including Express) will include the VS2010 and VS2008 designers.
3.1 release
As mentioned, 3.1 will ship in the next couple of weeks. We’ve completed the key features that we were aiming for and are now in the process of polishing the release, fixing a few outstanding bugs, updating documentation and otherwise preparing for launch. If there’s anything in particular you would like to have documented better then post a comment – now’s the time to let us know (we do have a bunch of things we’ll improve but it always helps to be reminded!).
Pricing changes
With the release of LightSpeed 3.1 we will be increasing the price per developer. If you have been evaluating LightSpeed but haven’t quite got around to purchasing your licenses yet then you should do so before the 3.1 release! All customers get 12 months worth of updates so you’ll get 3.1 as soon as it ships as well :-)

Any chance of updating the winforms MVC example to include how to bind to an error provider rather than just checking the IsValid property ?
I got stuck on this a week or two back, but haven’t had a chance to revisit as I’ve been doing other stuff
Cheers
In the API Section of the documentation, I would greatly appreciate small code examples showing how a property or method is typically used.
I am a self-taught, part-time developer and must rely extensively on whatever I can find for examples of how to do something.
Please don’t assume that all of your users are red-hot crack developers. Some of us are not! :)
Will 3.1 have support for WCF Ria Services?
Hello Kenneth,
Thanks for the suggestion. Adding examples of every single method or property in LightSpeed is likely to require a prohibitive amount of time, and we feel often won’t add value over what the docs already say, but we’ll see if we can add examples to some of the core APIs like the IUnitOfWork methods. We’re very open to suggestions on other areas that you feel would particularly benefit from example code fragments.
Don’t forget also that we include a number of samples that you can use to get some indication about how the APIs fit together — though I appreciate that taking in a single fragment about a specific API is a lot easier than digging through a sample to figure out how that API is used!
Hello Kamran,
At the moment it looks like 3.1 will not have support for RIA Services. We’ve hit a couple of roadblocks and the Microsoft RIA Services team have been less than helpful, so we’re not actively working on completing our RIA Services implementation right now. We hope to come back to it after 3.1, but there do seem to be significant and fundamental issues in the RIA Services code generation model that mean we’re not in a position to make any promises.
Hello guys,
have you got dead line, when it should be ready to release ? We’ve got new VS 2010 so it’s very important for us.
thanks
Best Regards

Hello Matous,
We’re finalising the release at the moment, so it will be later this week or early next week. Don’t forget you can use the nightly builds in the meantime!
