Hi, I'm currently evaluating a number of O/RM packages. Lightspeed is on the list. I'm confused by your licensing model. I found (at least) two versions on your web site : 1."We picked a licensing model that makes it easy for you to calculate the cost for
a project. No per-seat pricing, no need to install a licensing server - you
simply buy a license for the IP owner (e.g. Just 1 if you build one project, 5
if you build 5 systems for 5 different customers)." - and if we build a 2-tier WinForm project with several clients connecting to one SQL database whe need one license for each client ? Also for 3- tier Winform application which one will be the IP owner ? 2."LightSpeed is licensed per organization. This means that a single license can serve multiple developers and multiple projects within a single organization. If LightSpeed is used as part of a solution developed for someone else, then an additional license will need to be obtained." - of course we develop for someone else . LightSpeed is for developers, isn't it ? 3."LightSpeed source code is available" - we need the source code to adapt to our needs. This is mandatory. Considering that we will change the source code , in this case which is the licensing model ?

Hi, The LightSpeed license is owned by the IP owner. This can be:
You will only need a license for whoever owns the source code to your applications (being 2-tier, 3-tier, n-tier, it doesn't really matter). The number of clients connecting doesn't impact the licensing. If you have more detail around your specific scenario I would be happy to provide more detail as to the licensing requirements for your situation. Regarding source code modification, please refer to section 2.4 of the end user license agreement (it is installed with LightSpeed in the start menu for your reference). Effectively you can modify the source code for the application but you must not re-distribute it, sell it separately, etc. This is primarily to prevent piracy and misuse of our intellectual property. The license agreement is the official line on all licensing questions however we are always happy to make special arrangements under certain circumstances. Contact me directly at jd@mindscape.co.nz if there is some sensitivity around what you are doing. I'd be interested in learning more about the changes you would look to make to the source - we base future changes on feedback we receive so improving our understanding of what users want to achieve is helpful to us. I hope this helps, John-Daniel |
